About the island

Vis is a very picturesque town with attractive stone houses, Renaissance and Baroque palaces and several churches from 16th and 17th century.

The colony Issa was founded in the 4th century BC by the Greeks from Siracuse in Vis town. It was the most prominent Greek settlement on the Eastern Adriatic coast. The Greek town was built on terraces sloping gently to the sea front and fortified by defensive walls, which are partially preserved to the present day and so are the termae from 1st.century BC and the remains of the walls and mosaics discovered in archeological excavations.

VIS is a main town and port in the eastern part of the northern coast of the island of Vis. Main occupations are wine production, fishing, tourism and agriculture. The town of Vis is situated on the regional road with everyday ferry and catamaran (speedboat) connections to Split. The untouched nature with the crystal clear sea, the famous Blue Cave, Tito's Cave and many other world known sites as well as the local specialities - seafood from the cleanest part of the Adriatic, various sports and recreation opportunities, they all constitute the offer of Vis, an island which emerged from a long period of isolation (tourists from abroad have been allowed to visit the island since 1989).
